Taoyuan Airport Day 1

You need not get to Taipei to board the HSR train to Taichung. Taoyuan HSR Station is nearer to Taichung HSR Station than Taipei HSR Station.



From Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA) > Taoyuan HSR Station

Taoyuan HSR station (not in Taoyuan City) is about 7 km from TTIA. United buses (service #705) serve this route take about 20 mins travelling time. Board the United bus at the public buses parking bays at either Terminal 1 or 2. Bus frequency is regular. Pay NT$30 in coins as you board the bus.

If staying in Taipei, how do i then get to Taipei HSR station
Taipei City is served by High Speed Rail (HSR), railway (TRA) and Taipei Metro (MRT) train services. The only location where all three types of trains converge is Taipei Main Station in downtown Taipei. All stations are below street level and are linked by long underground malls. The Taipei HSR Station is below street level at Taipei Main Station integrated with the railway and MRT Stations.

How to Get There?: 

By Train: From Taipei, take the train north to Ruifang Station. After exiting the station, cross the street to the bus stop next to the Wellcome Supermarket and board the Keelung Transit bus towards Jiufen. The bus trip takes roughly 15 minutes, and the fare is NT$21 during the week, NT$15 during weekends/holiday.
By Bus (via MRT): From Zhongxiao Fuxing (忠孝復興), Brown and Blue lines, leave from Exit 1 and take bus route 1062 (Keelung Bus) to Jiufen. The ride is about 1 hour and the fare is NT$90. Be sure to sit on the left side of the bus to enjoy scenic views of Northern Taiwan.

What Else?: 

Some nice activities in Jiufen include hiking on Mt. Keelung (基隆山), drinking chinese tea at the City of Sadness Restaurant (悲情城市小上海茶樓), visiting the Gold Museum (新北市立黃金博物館), visiting the newly opened park Jinguashi (金瓜石), and, of course, beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.

Jiufen is the setting of the Taiwanese film City of Sadness (悲情城市), the first film to discuss the politically controversial228 Incident, and as a result of the film's success, many new visitors were drawn to visit Jiufen to experience a time gone by.

The unique architecture of Jiufen's downtown area was used as the model for the Japanese animated film Sprited Away.

Be sure to check out the Shengping Theater (昇平劇院), a prominent cultural landmark located on Qingbian Road built during the Japanese occupation. Both the theater and surrounding buildings feature 1930-40s architectural elements, and has more recently been used as the set for commercials and movies, including City of Sadness.

Visit the Jiufen Kite Museum (九份風箏博物館) to see colorful kites of all shapes and sizes from around the world. The museum also offers classes for visitors to make a kite of their own, and is open on weekends.

Jiufen is located in Ruifang District of New Taipei City. The town of Ruifang is a great place to begin your adventure in scenic Northern Taiwan.
